Medal

Medal

After some time letting out my anger via art, I wanted to step away from that a little bit but that left me with something that I like but feels a little bit like a failed experiment.

“Medal” – created July 2, 2021. Acrylic on paper.

I’d been using bubble wrap to help control the splatter on my previous few pieces, and before that I’d used grass as a brush to give some organic texture to the paint.  I wanted to combine the two and see what kind of look I’d get from using bubble wrap to smear paint around the paper.

As it turns out, it doesn’t leave much texture at all.  Spinning the sheet of bubble wrap causes any texture that would appear to be flattened out.  Only in the middle, where there’s less impact from the smearing, did any depth really remain.  So that was a little disappointing.

That said, I really like how the colors combined.  Also, just by chance, I happened to spin it in a more circular pattern than ovoid.  I think it gives it a look something like an Olympic medal.

I’d like to say that was on purpose, and that the bottom left edge is meant to be rust, or the top right is meant to appear as if it’s dissolving, to represent the deleterious impact the Olympics have on their host cities, but I can’t.  There’s no deep meaning, it didn’t even turn out the way I wanted it to, but I like it anyway.

And that’s good enough.
