Having finished off “Legends” and gotten into poured paints, I wanted to do something that combined that with with the spin art that I’d been trying out over the summer.  I had a cool, round canvas from a poured paint bundle that I’d gotten over Christmas, so I figured that made sense to try out, too.  And it didn’t turn out at all like I expected.

“Waves” – completed February 20, 2022. Acrylic on canvas.

I did this as a dirty cup pour, with a mix of blues and orange/pink/peach, trying to approximate the colors of a winter sunrise.  As I did the pour, I spun the canvas on a wheel to see how that would impact the paint spread.

I’m not exactly sure how it happened, but the blue ended up overwhelming pretty much all of the other colors.  The rest became thin lines of a coral-ish color.

It gives the appearance of waves in the water, as viewed from above.

I like it but I am disappointed, as I’d hoped for a different outcome and I don’t know what I would need to change to get there.  I want to learn something from each piece I create and I don’t feel like I learned anything with this one.  I also kind of botched sealing it and there’s a bit of a blob of finish that you can see if you look for it.

It’s hard to shake the feeling that this was a wasted opportunity.  Maybe, combined with something else I do in the future, I can find something to take away from it.
