Spectrum

As I mentioned in my write-up for “Beyond,” I returned to my power tools art project to try flinging glue at paper and then spreading colored sand across it. There were some problems, though, so “Beyond” didn’t turn out quite the way I expected. I learned from that for “Spectrum,” however.

“Spectrum” – created July 4, 2021. Sand on paper.

The issue was that I was doing this work on a very hot, very sunny day, and the glue was coming out in thin streams. It was drying before I could finish spreading the sand. To fix that, I enlisted my daughter’s help. I spread the red, orange, and yellow sand while she did purple, blue, and green.  With two of us, we got the sand down fast enough.

And I love how it turned out. I previously said that I work with rainbows just to see a lot of colors when I’m experimenting. If blue, for example, shows particularly nicely, I know that I can plan something around that. So the color palate isn’t anything particularly meaningful here but I do love how it turned out.

Specifically, I love being able to throw the glue in one direction, then throw the sand in another. It gives me some other ideas for mixing and matching patterns that I’ll try in the future.
