When I wrote up “Medal” I said that I wish it represented “the deleterious impact the Olympics have on their host cities.” I’d had that on my mind in the run up to the Tokyo Olympics and, after completing “Ring,” I knew how I wanted to represent that.
There isn’t much new here as far as technique goes, as it’s basically “Ring” repeated four additional times. That said, I usually prefer to set my art projects up as a one-and-done kind of thing, so the idea of waiting for one part to dry and then adding another is something different for me.
There are a lot of imperfections that I think are appropriate. Some of the colors didn’t come out quite right. None of the circles are quite perfect. The yellow, in particular, turned out really thin and ran all over the place. But the whole idea is that the Olympics aren’t perfect so all of that fits.
